Self Employed Category Immigration
The Self Employed Persons Program (SEPP) offers permanent residency to individuals who are self-employed in cultural activities or athletics. To be eligible, applicants must have relevant experience in the profession under which the candidates choose to apply for the SEPP as well as an intention and ability to become self-employed in Canada. When considering an application, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will assess it against a number of selection criteria. These include:
Relevant Experience
Applicants must demonstrate that they have a minimum of two years of related experience in the last five years before applying under the category they choose to apply. This means the applicant needs to provide evidence of their experience, such as references from former employers or a portfolio of work.
Ability and intent to be Self-Employed in Canada
Applicants must show that they have the intention and ability to create a business in Canada. This includes providing a business plan, evidence of financial resources, and demonstrating their understanding of the Canadian market.
Ability and intention and ability to make a Significant Contribution to Specific Economic Activities
Applicants must demonstrate that their proposed venture will make a significant contribution to one of the designated activities under the SEPP. These include arts, culture, sports, or agricultural activities.
In addition, applicants must meet other eligibility requirements. These include:
Age: The applicant must be at least 18 years old.
Education: Applicants must have a post-secondary degree or diploma from a recognized institution.
Official Language Proficiency: Applicants must demonstrate proficiency in one or both of the official languages (English or French).
Adaptability: Applicants must demonstrate that they have the ability to settle in Canada.
Confirming the applicant’s intended occupation: The immigration officer may ask the applicant to provide evidence that their proposed venture is genuine, such as a business plan or proof of investment.
Processing time?
Processing times vary depending on the country of origin and can range anywhere from several months to two years.
